February 22, 2009 Parting Gift
by Tondagossa
So as I’m packing for my upcoming move (back) to the DC/MD/VA Metropolitan area, I find one of the first Christmas cards I’ve ever received after I arrived here in California… dated December 2004! Wow, the time really flies. And of course, a lot has changed since then, which goes without saying.
But as I prepare to leave, I think about the people here that I’m leaving behind – how I’ll miss them. So I thought I’d leave behind a little list of sorts, not meant to be comprehensive by any means. It’s sort of a piece of me that has been made up of my “foodie adventures” here in Bakersfield.
Not very many people know this, but Bakersfield has more hidden gems than you would think. Basque and Tex-Mex food may come to mind when you’re a hungry visitor new to the city. It’s true you can find some great Basque and Mexican food here, but there’s definitely much more to be found. Too Fat is a no-brainer for incredible deli-style subs or sandwiches and Rusty’s has some of the best local pizza I’ve ever had. So I’ll just gloss over those two things and get into the nitty-gritty.
Italian Food
Frugatti’s is a great Italian restaurant that’s on Coffee Road. It’s a nice family-owned restaurant with patio seating for sunny days, of which there are a lot. The food is old-fashioned home-style cooking – can’t go wrong. The first time I went to this place, I had the fettuccini alfredo… and it floored me. One of the best I’ve had.
I know people around here say Luigi’s is good too. I’ve had the Pasta Bolognese and thought it was good – just not great. They sell their sauce in the deli section of the groceries around here, so people must really like it. Too bad I haven’t had a chance to try Luigi’s again since I heard about the place just recently.
Japanese Food
Izumo is a tiny, inconspicuous restaurant, hidden on the corner of Ming and Stine. If you’re not looking for it, you’ll probably never find it. Haha… it’s way in the corner there, past the FoodMaxx, kind of like it’s attempting to keep its delicious secrets hidden – the fresh cuts of maki, nigiri or sashimi, the udon soups, even the Teppan grill (if that’s your thing). They even have offerings such as yakisoba or slices of unagi (fresh water eel) served on rice, which you can’t always find in every Japanese restaurant. Best sushi and value in town, in my opinion. Also, the service is very friendly.
Pho
Okay, so I made a separate section for pho. I didn’t feel right making a whole section for Vietnamese food if I wasn’t going to go all the way, you know? But if you want some good pho, try some from Maui Pho Fusion BBQ & Grill, located on Ming & Stine. Yes, yes… they have a funky name and seem like they might not have enough focus to make a decent pho – but trust me. If you’re craving pho (or have a hangover), go there. Ask for a beef pho. Enjoy.
Soul Food
The one and only place you need to know about around Bakersfield when it comes to soul food is J’s Place, which you can find on Ming and New Stine where Today Cleaners is. The showstopper on their menu is the chicken. I remember when I was waiting for my food the first time I went there, people who didn’t know each other were having discussions about how much they liked the chicken! J’s definitely has a following, but it’s word-of-mouth – and that’s saying something. Also, just about everything else on their menu is as good as the chicken, including the sides. On a cold Thusday night, their chicken n’ dumplings are a treat. Another guilty pleasure of mine are the oxtails – so delicious. Oh… and the catfish… and the cornbread… and the chili… I’m really going to miss this place. ‘Nuff said.
Burgers and Fries
Yeah… I went there. I’m not ashamed. If we’re doing food, we have to do all food. So here it is – no pun intended, but it’s a whopper – 34th Street Carwash. Yes. I said it. And I said it with respect. Hands-down, these are the best burgers and fries I’ve had to date. I don’t know what’s going on in that little restaurant that they placed there so people can eat while they get their cars cleaned. But whatever it is has made it one of Bakersfield’s best kept secrets, and I’m letting everyone know about it. If you’re in town, eat there. Try an Ortega Burger with fries… or a regular burger with fries… or hell, just the fries… just go there!
Beer
This more or less applies to California and the surrounding areas. Pyramid, Anchor, Pacifico – these are some names to look for. Some beer are just harder to find outside of California, and I’d say as a rule of thumb: always try out the local (or harder to find) beer wherever you are. And when in California, it always makes sense to try the wine.
If you’re from the area, feel free to chime in with your favorite places! And… farewell. 🙂

Hi Tonda Gossa & M. Russo! Sad to say, but both of you are mistaken. Maui Pho Fusion BBQ & Grill is not all that great. I think Pho-Vi is actually the better choice.

Dude! I know I’ve killed my fair share of brain cells thanks to Mexican beer. Who can resist when we have so many to pick from here in CA. Some of my favorites are Pacifico, Tecate, Sol, Dos Equis, Carta Blanca, Superior, Indio, Bohemia and Noche Buena.

Dude, where do you get your Noche Buena from????

Yes, all the places listed are great, but what about Happy Jacks Burger & Pie? You can’t pass this place up. I know a lot of people dislike it because:
1-it’s small
2-they do not serve fries
3-getting a stool can be a challenge
4-they only take cash
but the juicy burgers plus the light and fluffy pies make up for whatever it might be missing.

How did I forget that one? So many to name. I thought Happy Jack’s had very yummy burgers and even yummier pies. The little restaurant actually seemed kinda cozy to me, personally. It’s the kind of place I like going to at the end of a night.
But you got me on point #2 – I’m one of those who felt that the fries were missing, though it IS definitely worth going to just to try the unique pies.
For those who don’t mind eating a great burger without fries (and they do offer chips upon request), I’m with dacakelady – by all means try Happy Jack’s. I’m just more of a “34th Street burger and fries” package kind of guy I guess. lol.

Hahaha I love it!! To me the only downside is walking to your car and sitting your butt down on a hot leather seat. Ouch! That really burns!! 😦
Nantekodda!!

I love Bakersfield eventhough it becomes the land of egg-frying sidewalks in the summer!

I read this a few days ago, but for some reason I always hesitate to leave the first comment. I moved here from Utah and I cannot belive, I once believed that Chili’s and Taco Bell were actual Mexican food. Soon after I moved here, I discovered Molcajetes. Now you can find me there all the time enjoying a Molcajete Supremo and a margarita.

I’m loving all the comments. Thanks everyone! Please don’t hesitate to keep them coming. ^_^
Los Molcajetes was a great find for me as well. A co-worker took me there one day and the presentation, along with the flavors, were spectacular. Yes, nice margaritas. Good, friendly atmosphere.

I’ve always found it hard to find good sushi places, especially in PA. We once had a whole bunch of friends join us at the teppan grill for my birthday. My husband had to talk me into it. I am kind of shy and most chefts seem to be really outgoing and talkative..not really my cup of tea. I guess that’s part of the job. Sounds like Izumo is a great place!!

Izumo is the best sushi place in town hands down. You are always greeted very warmly. Unlike the other sushi joints in town, here you get miso soup, edememe and a salad, all included as soon as you get settled in. The food is always good and they don’t do the trendy stuff that some of the newer places are doing. So in a nutshell, if you want the best Japanese food in town go to Izumo. I’ve been a happy customer for almost 15 years.

I have been to Izumo about 6 times and can say this is where I learned to love sushi. I like to stop by once every two weeks. I love the atmosphere on Fri. & Sat. nights, but you do have to make sure you are not in a hurry…because it can be while before you get your food.

My first impression of Maui Pho Fusion.. the detail on the glass doors impressed me. My friend told me that place used to be a Burger King back in the late 1990s. I had never had Vietnamese food before and the first thing I ever ordered was the beef and seafood combo pho. One word, DELICIOUS! The broth was like none I had ever tasted. Since I am chopstick challenged(yes, my friend even got me a shirt), I had trouble with the delicate noodles. On our way out, my friend got me a boba tea..yummy!

I’ve always been a fan of trying mom’n’pop restaurants, and this is the best I’ve ever had. I love the atmosphere at Frugatti’s, the decor has a sense of whimsy. I love how it’s decorated with old family portraits and the patio with its stringed lights is the perfect setting for a casual, yet romantic date.

I completely agree. All the points you bring up… that’s half of what kept bringing me back to Frugatti’s. It’s the kind of place I enjoy. The food is the other half of course.
Yes… I even enjoy the accordion players they bring out some evenings.

Great list! I moved to Bakersfield from “snow covered” Canada. I’ve grown to love this city and all the different people living here. This town really is a melting pot. While many may see the small town feel as a down side of living here, I still find it charming. The only restaurant your list is missing is Pappy’s. A rustic coffee shop in the Rosedale area. The huevos rancheros are the best. There’s no denying that the Mexican community has brought some of the best food, warmth and hospitality to this area.

I unfortunately never tried Pappy’s. Sounds like a great place as I’m a fan of all the local Mexican food in that area. I hope I get another chance to try it sometime!
