All-You-Can Eat Ice-Cream Festival
July 3&5, 2010
Penn’s Landing
Philadelphia, PA

Yes, the rumors are true. I was disqualified from competing at Nathan’s hot dog eating championship this year due to on-going contract disputes. Well…not really…but I’ll take any excuse to attend an all-you-can-eat ice-cream festival.

The Ice-Cream Festival was held at the waterfront on Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All the major players were present: Turkey Hill, Good Humor, Dairy Queen, Hagen Das, Edy’s, Ben & Jerry’s, and a few local shops peddling their frosty wares. Like the much-fabled “Land of Chocolate”, there was no shortage of delectable treats. From Italian ice to strawberry shortcake bars to peanut brittle and coffee ice-cream, there was something for everybody. If there was a herald of vuvuzelas, it would’ve been the ice-cream social equivalent of walking into a swarming bee hive.

While I didn’t quite Man vs. Food the competition, tallying a meager 5 cups of ice-cream, the all-you-can-eat ice-cream festival was still a fun experience. My system of shimmying from booth to booth between the flooding mass-romantic of people kinda became a game…like Pacman, with cups of ice-cream replacing yellow ambiguous pellets, and sugar-fueled families subbing for vulturing ghosts. Most importantly, the proceeds from the event went towards a good cause, benefiting the Joshua Kahan Fund for pediatric leukemia research. Other than diving into a pool of Slurpee, I can’t think of a better way of cooling off on a hot summer day.
