March 28, 2009 Le Pancake Puffery
by Bananaketchup
Browsing through Bed, Bath & Beyond, I stumbled upon my culinary muse, as seen on TV: Pancake Puffs. She whispered to me, “Add pizzazz to every meal with these savory puffs,” and visions of amateur food porn of my own doing danced through my head. This is my story…
Everything seemed simple enough from conception to execution. Mix the pancake batter? Check. Lube up the special pan with non-stick cooking spray? Check plus. Crank out a happy assembly line of delectable deserts? Um….
It was hard getting the ratio of batter-to-pan just right, and turning over the puffs to brown the other side with the provided wooden skewers? It was equivalent to playing an intoxicated game of Operation with my feet. There was a slight learning curve with my Pancake Puff experience, but after the 3rd or 4th batch it was like second nature.
Obviously, nothing is ever as pretty as pictured on TV, and I question whether or not the end product was really worth all of the time and effort, with the pancake puff essentially turning out to be the evin twin brother of the donut hole. I guess the main attraction with the puffs are filling them up with random ingredients like jelly, chocolate, marshmallow fluff, fatty duck liver, etc.
So, with delusions of wanna-be-iron-chefness, 45 minutes had passed with 5 plating attempts and I finally settled on a simple motif: Nutella filled Pancake Puffs with a generous coating of powdered sugar, sliced strawberries, and a couple sprigs of mint. I would probably call the desert “Strawberry Fields” if I were to open a Pancake Puff Cafe somewhere (cleverly named Le Pancake Puffery and proudly brewing Starbucks Coffee).
Overall, it was fun cooking the Pancake Puffs. The possibilities of sweet or savory dishes are open-ended enough to allow some creative ingenuity to shine with cooks who like to experiment with food. But truthfully, I can only really see myself using this contraption every once in a while; whenever I get bored with the blatant unpuffiness of regular pancakes.

Hey bananaketchup! It looks delish… A giant cup of fresh brewed Starbucks coffee and my morning would be complete. I bet those are addictive! Great pictures.

Thanks D.Pina! The pancake puffs are pretty addictive and go perfect with some Starbucks. They’re perfect for on the go snacking too. 🙂

After reading this page I decided to use the new toy I got for x-mas. I must say, you need patience for this! It’s the flipping part that you have to learn how to perfect. What I got was a perfect round puff on one side and an imperfect bumpy puff on the other. Any advice? Overall, they still turned out ok. I made some dulce de leche for the filling and topped them with fresh strawberries. Maybe next time, I will dip one side in melted chocolate and sprinkle roasted peanuts on top.

I’m totally addicted to pancake puffs now. I love dulce de leche, but have no idea how to make it. I’ve seen the canned ones in the international foods aisle. Is the canned stuff any good? Can you share your recipe???? PWEESE!!! I’m also wanting to try cornbread mix and cocktail wiennies to make mini corndogs.

I’ll tell you what to do. It’s really simple. Go to your local grocery store and look in the inter, foods section. Buy a can of Mexican dulce de leche. La Lechera is a best selling brand in Mexico. In Mexico we call it cajeta or dulce de leche and you can usually find it canned or in an easy to squirt bottle. If you want to know what it looks like visit lalechera.com.

If you cant find La Lechera, buy a can of Carnation condensed milk, poke 2 holes on the top. Fill a pot with about 1.5 inches of water. Stand can inside pot of water and boil for about 2 hours. Remove can from water when milk turns a light brown.

“Le Pancake Puffery” very clever. Maybe I should have you name my store. What should I name a store that carries trendy plus size clothing and lingerie? I was thinking Luscious or Curves “R” US…And I bet you could sell your pancake puffs at our store…LOL

Finally, I can come out of the closet on this! I work as a cashier. I have lots of fun watching people that come out of the toiletry/personal hygiene aisle with an embarassed look on their faces because they’re buying stuff like condoms and lube that they don’t want anybody else to know about! AND they always end up hidding it underneath other items!! One of my favorites was a guy who bought a loaf of bread, a bottle of beer, lube, and a bottle opener. And then there was the time someone came through with just a vibrating toothbrush, lube, and a packet of condoms! Now I wonder what he was about to do….

Hahaha, the underbelly of grocery stores. I had similar experiences working at a retail store.

Hehehe, Amateur Food Porn!! Sooo naughty!! I guess it makes sense since Pancake Puffs + fresh strawberries + whipped cream = sex on a plate!!

Yup, and the cashier at the grocery gave me a look as if she wanted to know what I had planned with my night when she rang up my chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and strawberries. LOL.

I also got mine @ Bed Bath & Beyond. She whispered to me, “Take me home with you my love” At first it was a little hard to flip the puffs and they always got stuck. I now know that butter works better than non stick spray. I have made the pizza puffs, blueberry muffins, banana bread puffs. Whick ones have you tried?

I only tried buttermilk pancakes so far but the pizza puffs sound yummy. I bet the butter tastes alot better than the cooking spray too. =)
